Description
Calendar Butte is a 160 foot tall wall that's nearly dead vertical to overhung located just adjacent to the Walker Valley ORV Recreational Area. The current approach trail is two miles long, but it's well worth the excursion. The sport routes are intended to be safe and comfortably bolted, with most routes sporting lower-off carabiners and fixed draws on all overhung sections. There are a handful of trad lines at Calendar Butte, and all of them also have good protection with the exception of the historical route Excavator.
At least a 70 meter rope is necessary to climb at Calendar Butte, but an 80m and even a 100m rope can allow for toproping the entire wall.
The main wall faces due south so it dries fairly quickly, but is subject to seepage during the wet months. However, it can be climbed year round even in the snow and freezing temps if four or five days without rain occur. I'm currently typing this after an amazing session in January where icy temps plugged all the seepage and the wall was warm and dry enough to climb in tee shirts. Hot Rock and the Via Ferrata wall are good spots for sunny cold days. Shadow Wall and Creek Wall are good for the hot days.
Development is ongoing here, so take care that there are not people working above you if you see fixed ropes on the wall. It's always a good idea to announce your arrival if you don't see anyone around as the developers may be cleaning above if they think nobody is there.
Getting There
The approach to Calendar Butte is a convoluted 2 mile hike mostly on a network of gravel forestry roads. There are a few creek crossings, but there's enough logs and exposed rocks that I've never had to wade to get across them. Still, it's convenient to wear waterproof shoes or boots.
You can use the Mountain Project map on your phone to navigate the approach trail via GPS. Click the Map button above and follow the yellow line.
The GPS coordinates in Mountain Project point to the parking area for driving directions, but the sub areas point to the actual wall. I've also uploaded a chossy sketch of the approach map to the images for this section if you like a more low-tech approach.
If parking on both sides by the concrete blocks is occupied, there's another place to park about 100 yards east next to Pilchuck Creek. It's a narrow drivewayish feature, so try not to block other people into it.
