Let me tell you about this piece of rock...
A tucked away panel of previously quarried, bullet-hard overhanging limestone, the blocks of which where used to build Old Cap. A nice mix of easy to hard lines with sharp edges and dynamic movement. A gift from old state geologist Samuel Calvin, Iowa's first systematic geologist and expert of the Pleistocene age who's photo collection of Iowa landforms is unparalleled and may offer many more leads on the unanticipated geologic wonders of Iowa. The twenty volumes of the Reports of the Iowa Geological Society, published almost wholly under his guidance and containing many of his own personal contributions are splendid testimony to his zeal, industry, and scientific acumen. Do Calvin proud and crank away on them fossilized fish bone crimps.
Public land. A short 20 minute jump hop and skip from Iowa City.
