Description
Crooked Finger Tower is a distinctive, nearly 200-foot pillar at the northern end of the East Humboldt Range, 9.5 miles southwest of Wells, Nevada. It lies in an alpine setting at around 9750 feet in elevation on the east side of the crest of the range. It’s clearly visible from the valley below while driving along the Great Basin Highway (US 93). It appears as a short, stubby thumb next to the much larger Chimney Rock, its neighbor to the east. Another prominent feature called the Fin lies nearby to the west.
Getting There
Access is from Angel Lake, which has a paved alpine highway running to it from Wells. The approach hike heads south from the Angel Lake parking and takes about 90 minutes of cross-country travel with a 1400-foot elevation gain.
Follow the wide trail from parking lot along the south side of Angel Lake. It narrows to a small path up through scrubby aspen to base of wall. Follow trail steeply up along the left side of this wall for several hundred feet to the crest of the ridge. Trail becomes faint then largely non-existent. Work right (west) up the ridge through sagebrush and pine to a broken cliff band. Traverse left (south) into the basin south of Angel Lake and find the path of least resistance across basin and then up to the clearly visible Crooked Finger Tower and its neighbor Chimney Rock. Expect some snow on the approach if done in June or early July. Approximately 90 minutes.
