Description
The Monker Boulders are two granite boulders nestled together about 1/3 mi up Rockbound Canyon (34.304324, -117.831601) from a small turnout on Highway 39. This area has routes of varying difficulty and style, ranging from polished slab to dynamic overhangs. "Monker A" is the larger of the two boulders and is sizeable compared to other boulders in the Angeles National Forest. Monker A has good rock quality on most faces and top-outs range from 10 to 20ft. Monker B is about half the size of Monker A and has top-outs ranging from 10 to 18ft.
Getting There
Drive up Highway 39 and park in a small righthand turnout ( goo.gl/maps/PVN3TjhjAB6jMeGXA) just before Falling Springs. From the turnout, follow a trail that hugs the left-hand side of the canyon until it mostly disappears. Continue following the stream up the canyon, making sure to stay LEFT at the fork. From the fork to the boulders there is a difficult-to-follow approach path that zig-zags back and forth over the stream for the remainder of the approach. This path is loosely marked by ribbons tied to trees (shown in photo). Eventually, you will reach a rope to assist a small slab on the left of the stream. At points along the approach, scrambling is necessary. Eventually, the canyon opens up into an wash. Continue up this to eventually reach the boulders ( goo.gl/maps/Yg7ALWFWHm1EDWddA ). While the approach is only 0.4mi, it is slow progress; expect the approach to take around 30 minutes for first timers. Beware of poison oak around the stream.
