Description
This area is east of The Notch and is a secluded and quiet collection of boulders that offers short to tall problems ranging from V0 to V4. If you are a V10 boulderer then this probably isn't the place for you unless you can find some stout first ascents. Speaking of FA's, there are still plenty to be had in this area. The camping is super close and makes for a fun overnighter or a quick day trip from SLC. I have been developing problems in this area for a year or so finding no evidence of previous climbing. If you know of any please add to the list or let me know. You can see a map of the area and how to get there here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1GACYcds6sSt03y51O0QmZD9MmF9hEMAC&usp=sharing
On the eastern boundary of the Great Basin, this portion of the Moroni Formation contains various boulders consisting mostly of Moroni Tuff which was created from the volcanic eruptions during the Neogene Period. The character of the rock can be bulletproof to soft with exfoliating flakes which can make FA highballs quite exciting. The rock often has many pockets left over from trapped air during formation. The large crystals and quick lithification nature of the rock can make it very sharp which can make your visit fairly short but will create world class callouses for the determined climber.
Getting There
From SLC: take I-15 south to the bustling town of Nephi at exit 225 for Highway 132. Head due west on 132 for 12.5 miles to Furner Pass. Here you will pull off the highway and head south on Sage Hole Road for about 1.5 miles. There are a couple of sketchy and rocky spots on this road but it is well maintained and passable with any vehicle with clearance. This road will take you down through the Junipers to an obvious intersection. Just beyond this intersection you will see a telephone pole; take an older track going left at the telephone pole. This track can be a bit hard to see and will take you out to the large and obvious Shiprock and to the camping area overlooking the rest of the East Notch area.
