Description
Tucked away on Titlow Hill Rd off Forest Route 5N10 (Five and Dime), this crag offers technical climbing from 5.5 trad to 5.11+ sport.
There are two main areas: Upper and Lower Five and Dime. Upper Five and Dime is sporty and overhung, offering a substantial challenge to those confident in the grade; the climbs here are no gimme. To set the top rope for routes there, walk past the descent trail around the rock and scramble through some brush and around the rock. You will come to a field of very loose scree, descend carefully and trend left to a large bush. To your left will be the anchors for Chicken and Fries, and to your right (over the bush and top of the rock) are the anchors for the other routes. One route--Uncle Jam--is lead-only. You will need trad gear to lead that climb.
Lower Five and Dime is more technical and slabby, and all of the routes can be set up for a top rope without needing to be led first. To get to Lower Five and Dime, walk down over the large block and past a broken snag. You can set up top ropes by scrambling up the rock directly in front of you. Descend to the base trending left at the madrone tree. DO NOT GO DOWN THE LARGE ROOT AND ALONG THE BASE OF THE ROCK! THE SOIL THERE IS VERY LOOSE AND EXTREMELY PRONE TO EROSION! Instead, make your way left and down slope through a talus field to find the base. The trail is currently under development, but the general idea is to stay left on the descent, and right when hiking out.
The climbing is in the shade most of the day thanks to the west-facing cliffs being surrounded by valleys and trees.
Getting There
From Arcata, head north and take Highway 299 east towards Willow Creek. Turn right at Titlow Hill Rd (just past Berry Summit), and continue for just over 6 miles (15 minutes). Go left at the fork (Forest Route 5N10), and continue for just under 2 miles (~10 minutes). Park at the pull out on the left hand side.
You can easily see the top formation from the road. Approach that formation, and you will see a trail cutting down the slope. Find the fixed static lines and work your way down to the upper wall.
