Description
The rock is a type of limestone called dolomite. Most routes tend to be vertical with bulges. It I can be fractured and loose but also has sections of bulletproof limestone that is fantastic. Good trad gear skills are needed. The rock has excellent friction but can also have some rope shredding edges. Long slings are necessary on most routes to avoid rope damage. Access is very short but there are times when you are hiking on edge of highway, so look out for traffic! The climbs get morning shade and afternoon sun.
Getting There
Drive south from Challis on highway 93 towards Mackay. Around ten miles, you enter this short narrow canyon. About halfway through, there is a large pullout on the left/ East side of road. Park here. El sendero gloominoso is a little ways south next to a huge chimney corner that faces left. Cross the small creek which was frozen when we did it in March, and hike up a short scree slope to base of route.
