Description
The large south-facing limestone cliff just east of the Warnick picnic area and above Avalanche Buttress and the lower cliffs. This is the largest cliff face in the area at around 300 feet tall and 500 feet wide. Silver Gate has the potential for many multi-pitch sport routes. The limestone is generally better quality than the average for American Fork but less pocketed.
Getting There
As you drive towards Tibble Fork, watch left after passing the Martin picnic area for the large clearing where you will spot the obvious large cliff standing above the gully and some lower cliff bands. Park at a pullout or up the road a bit at Warnick. I'm not aware of an obvious approach trail. Generally follow the right side of the clearing aiming towards the right side of the Silver Gate cliff. Stay to the right of the lower cliff bands as you scramble your way through talus and up to the base. Once reaching the base follow the base of the cliff to the left. Approach takes about 40 minutes with maybe 600 feet of elevation gain. Please post any improved approach instructions.
There is an alternate approach route that is shown in the photos posted on 8/12/2025. Rather than walking up the avalanche gulley, instead park at the first pullout on the right (east) side of the road. From there hike up the forested scree that is north (up canyon) from the avalanche gulley. There are several game trails that make this relatively easy. Eventually the slope narrows as you approach the base of a very large cliff. At this point you can access a ledge that goes south (left). That ledge will wrap all the way around the base of the cliff until you get to the climb. Again, please see the attached photo for a better understanding of the path.
