Description
Known until the 1940’s as the Men’s Athletic Pavilion, it was renamed to honor Clarence “Hec” Edmundson, who from 1920 to 1954 was a key figure in the University’s program for men’s physical education. A swimming pool was attached to the east in 1939 and other additions were built in 1970, ’78 and ’89. The original building was built in 1928.
One of the more “alpine” of campus outings, this building sports either an ascent route on a series of stepped ledges with a slippery, glacier-like, roof crossing on a fixed line, or a less than perfect dieback up its steepest face. Most will opt to take the easier “Beckey” route and climb tiered ledges in classic mountaineering style. The steeper “Boving” layback on the east face can be topped as a practice climb.
