Description
Basalt cliffs next to a *somewhat* discontinued railroad (occasionally they store train cars up the river, but if a train comes it can be heard from miles off and it travels very slowly too). This is our local climbing "gym" for St. Maries. Sunny most the day, but the sun sets relatively early there at about 3 or 4 pm. Great afternoon and evening summer climbing, and good all day in the other seasons. There is only top rope, trad, and bouldering so far as there are only 8 bolts total at the top, 4 pairs. The bolts can be accessed via a trail on the right hand side of the rocks. The cracks in the basalt make for some awesome trad climbs all along the ~100 yards long cliff, and the whole wall can traversed low to the ground as one massive boulder problem. It's also really beautiful scenery with river running right by; eagles, osprey, deer, water-fowl, and even the occasional moose can all be spotted here using the river as a highway or hunting grounds.
Getting There
Head south out of St Maries on the St Maries River Road (1st Street turns in to SM River Road, right behind the IGA grocery store) and go approximately 5.1 miles on this road. Just before the rocks you will pass Kittle Loop, then cross over the railroad tracks. The crag is right off the road by the tracks, and the lower parts are covered in graffiti. It's hard to miss.
