Description

The Hillside Boulders are the largest concentration of boulders at Keyhole. There’re numerous rocks in the living room to car-size range strewn about the hillside. Two main clusters starting in a drainage about three quarters the way up fan out into the biggest group on a shelf near the base of the hill. Many more are spread out between and around them. Lots of overhanging and steep face problems with a few cracks and some slab climbs sprinkled in. The hillside faces west and shade is plentiful for the first few hours of the day and gets full sun in the afternoon. But even so there’s shade pockets to climb or rest in all over the boulder field. A great place to climb.

Getting There

Follow the power line road south past the three turnoffs for Keyhole, past the wash to the Paiute Crags, and past a cattle guard turning left just after it onto the power line tower service loop. Staying left of the tower, weave through some creosote to an obscure road and follow this a quarter mile to the White Dream Slab parking area. Avoid driving on the bushes for obvious reasons but also because creosote has tough wood and is the cause of many flat tires.

From here hike south along the base of the hill to the next wash. Go up the wash as it cuts through a large dike of darker rock and then continue south staying in the wash, paralleling the dike on its east side. The lower boulder field starts at the saddle at the end of this section of wash. To get to the upper areas, from the shoulder, follow the drainage straight up the steep hillside under the south end of a 40’ outcrop, staying left of the low-angle slabs higher up.
