No new route development is allowed until further notice. On July 19, 2019, the US Forest Service issued a notice that it would no longer allow the installation of new bolts or the creation of new climbing routes after manufactured routes were established, then subsequently removed/altered by climbers. In addition, the bolts/fixed anchors on an estimated 50 climbs at Ten Sleep have been affected in some manner that may or may not make them unsafe to climb. The list of altered routes can be found in a drop down on the main, "Ten Sleep Canyon" homepage. The US Forest Service, Powder River Ranger District, is actively working with the local LCO, the Bighorn Climbers' Coalition and Access Fund to develop a sustainable framework for route standards and a Climbing Management Plan for the canyon's future.
Description
A newer edition to the canyon and one of the last, for a while unfortunately.
The Powers Wall has great mixture of climbing on stone that ranges from vertical to slightly overhanging and has a number of routes that tackle bulges. A highly pocketed wall that ranges from crispy, formerly chossy rock to bullet hard smooth sections. The grades range from 5.11- to 5.13 and there are nearly 30 climbs to choose from. The right side of the cliff is short and fairly steep, the center and left part of the wall has soaring long routes, many of which have mid anchors at the 2/3's point creating 5.11 bottoms and 5.12+ and harder extensions.
This wall was unfortunately vandalized by members of the Ten Sleep Aerospace Society FB page in July of 2019. Four routes on the far right side were targeted in the middle of the night and attacked with hammers, chisels and glue. The resulting mess, which precipitated the bolting ban and other crag closures in the canyon, left us with climbable but strangely altered climbs creating some unsafe situations
