Mišja Peč Rock Climbing

Misja Pec is one of the premiere hard sport climbing crags in Europe, though is relatively unknown outside of the continent. Brilliant steep limestone in a horseshoe shaped cirque. Can chase shade or sun as needed. 

Hundreds of routes with a wide variety of grades from 5.7 (4s and 5s) to the upper 5.14 (9a) ranges, but really shines in the 5.12 and 5.13 grades. Routes are covered in the guidebook Slovenija Sportnoplezalni Vodnik and potentially others, and are more thoroughly documented on 8a, the Crag, and other european centric sites. 

With hundreds of routes, there's climbing of all styles to be had. Easier, vertical climbing on the walls leading up to the main cave. The cave sides have short, powerful, severely overhanging routes. The center of the wall tends to host routes that test your stamina.

Most of the climbing tends to involve blocky, fingery holds. After decades of ascents, many of the routes here are severely polished, though even the popular testpieces still rack up dozens of ascents every year. There are some tufas and plenty of blocky features, so it can be good to bring a couple of kneepads, if you're into that kind of thing. 

Many of the popular routes sport fixed draws on some or all of the bolts. Most are fine, however, some may be in dubious condition, with rare reports of draws breaking or having sharp edges. Be sure to inspect the draws on whatever route you're getting on. 

Peak climbing season stretches through the fall into the winter, with late October and November being the prime months. The wall slowly creeps into the sun during the day, so on warmer days, mornings are shady and pleasant, and on cold days, afternoons are still climbable. Some of the crag is climbable even on rainy days. 

The easiest lodging is at the climbers hostel Ociski raj, located walking distance from the crag in Osp. Rooms are cheap and tend to fill up during the busy season, especially on weekends. There are several apartments for rent at reasonable prices in the surrounding towns, such as Osp and Crni Kal, and it's still within reasonable distance to stay in the larger Slovenian town Koper or bustling Italian city Trieste with a car. There is van camping around, though double check that it's allowed, and a paid campsite in Osp.
