Description
Remote wilderness area along the Rocky Mountain Front outside Augusta, Montana, up the Elk Creek drainage. Grizzly habitat, so bring bear spray. The first 3 miles of the approach can be made easier with a 4-wheeler, as it is on a 4-wheeler two-track. Once the two-track ends, it becomes the usual off-trail Montana adventure hike.
Getting There
From August, Montana, take Hwy 435 south for approximately 7 miles, until Elk Creek Road. Go southwest on Elk Creek Road until you get to National Forest. Continue a quarter mile until trail marker 257 on south side of road. The road to the trailhead is only 100 yards and requires a 4x4. Better to park at trailhead sign and jump the creek without getting soaked. Then follow the 4-wheeler two track for at least 3 miles. See the two photos with approach overlays for Amigos and for ET70, to see where to go after leaving the two track.
