Description
A Curule is a seat used in Roman times by dignitaries and the upper segment of society (pronounced Kyur ool). It was often used in amphitheaters like the Roman Coliseum. The seating gave the best view of the amphitheater. This Curule is a semi-detached spire on the right side entrance to the amphitheater/grotto. From the top, you not only have a marvelous view of the grotto, but of the canyon as well. The feature is split by cracks on the grotto side, creek side, and the top portion on the back - where it separates from the main wall.
Getting There
The path to Roman favor and a view from a curule was not an easy one, nor is the path to this curule. Cutting off early from the main trail into the canyon, you will approach along the ridge as if going to the route "into the maelstrom" but continue going down, toward the grotto from above. At the point it become too steep to hike and you are directly above the curule, you will do two rappels, both around 90 feet, and land in the notch between the spire and main wall from which you travel.
