Peregrine falcons select nest sites on cliffs in the Upper Skagit Valley, including the Climbing Management Areas of Newhalem West (Ryan’s Wall) and Newhalem East. As required in the NPS Superintendent’s Compendium, these areas will be closed to all public from March 1st to July 15th of each year, or until the young falcons have fledged or NPS staff have determined that nesting will not occur on a specific wall during this period. Access Fund, Washington Climbers Coalition and NPS partner on a volunteer raptor monitoring program to determine nesting activity. Description
A handful of routes north of the gravel frontage road in Newhalem. Lots of sun, but routes tend to seep. Climbing in permitted in the Ross Lake Recreation Area (part of North Cascades National Park complex), but not on Seattle City Light property. Not all of the routes visible from the road are part of the recreation area.
Getting There
Driving State Route 20 through Newhalem, a gravel frontage road runs parallel to the north of the highway. Park near turbine "sculpture"/ garden area across from general store. West of parking area, look for passage up to the boulder field near the electrical tower. Scramble up boulders to the rock wall featuring a large right facing corner corner. "Pizza Crack" 5.11a starts from a rock pedestal right of the big corner system.
