Description

Toller Tower is a small crag located about 200 feet north of, and at about the same elevation as, the right side of The Fun House. Toller is a small cliff band more than it is a "tower," but the formation name rings better using that word.

Two further notes:

First, although Toller Tower is located near The Fun House, intervening short cliffs make it difficult to approach one from the other. Use the approach down Broadway Gully described below.

Second, the formation name derives from the breed of the first ascent author's dogs, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers, or "Tollers." Tollers are smaller retrievers, very nimble and very smart. These dogs have spent many, many days climbing at Burst Rock.

Getting There

Approach Toller Tower from the Burst Rock Trail where that trail makes its major right turn near the obvious, low, rocky knoll shown on the map on page 74 of the 2013 guidebook. Exit the trail to the left at the beginning of the turn (this is about 100 feet before the turn-off to Green Acres). Parallel the low, rocky knoll past its south side (keep it to the left when hiking outbound). The ground starts dropping 200 feet northeast of this knoll. The drop is gradual at first and then steep. Broadway Gully starts here; it drops steeply to the northeast, 100 yards to the base of cliff bands in flatter, forested ground.

Find Toller Tower on the right side of Broadway Gully. It is possible to move out of the gully and onto Toller’s top at a point about one-third of the way down the gully. The formation’s base is about halfway down. Its northwest face is oriented directly into the gully (the route Fine Feathers is on this face). A fairly clean-cut arete separates this face from a northeast face to its left. This northeast face and, to its left, another northwest face are above a long, 35 foot deep ledge. The ledge also descends to the left - in the same direction as Broadway Gully). All of the routes on Toller Tower except Fine Feathers start from this large ledge. Get onto it by way of eight feet of class four, either 40 or 60 feet below (left of) the noticeable arete that separates the northeast and northwest faces.

The northeast face of Toller Tower gets sunshine on summer mornings; its northwest faces get no sun at all.
