Description
Due to ongoing property management issues, Steele cannot be considered a destination area for climbing.
The Southeastern Climbers Coalition (SCC) purchased a small section of Steele's extensive cliff line in 2009 after having been closed to climbing since 1987 ; the bulk of Steele is under private ownership and off-limits to climbing. Climbing at Steele dates back to the 1970’s and is predominantly traditional climbing, with some sport routes mixed in on 80 to 100 ft tall sandstone. Climbers will find a composting toilet located at the corner of the parking lot, thanks to grants from American Alpine Club and Access Fund.
The SCC portion of Steele is surrounded by privately owned cliff, so please stay on SCC property and do not trespass onto private property. Clear boundary signs are located at each end of the cliff. Deteriorating relations between the SCC and the neighboring property owners, combined with poor documentation of the small number of routes that are actually legal to climb, have made this an area that's less desirable than it once was.
