Description Suggest change

Not named on the Beartooth, Earthwalk, nor the USGS Squaretop map, this peak stands tall on the northwest side of New Fork River where it bends north at the entrance to New Fork Park. It's distinctive cone shape rises just south of the prominent Bull's Horns. It's south and east faces are characterized by clean sweeps of high quality Wind River stone. It's north face is licheny and consists of loose, blocky ledges. The summit of Ra Mountain (as called by Kelsey in his authoritative guide to the Winds) is a Wind River rarity: distinctive; one does not have to amble for miles across a nondescript plateau to reach a jumble of blocks. It can however, in true Wind River fashion, be reached by a third class scramble up the gully to the north. The true summit of this peak though is technical in nature and would require fifth class movement to reach. The sub-summit is an acceptable alternative.

Getting There Suggest change

The approach is easy by Winds standards and starts from the campground between the New Fork Lakes. Take the New Fork Trail without difficulty up to the Park. The trail crosses the stream twice just below the Park and can be a tricky proposition when the water's high. One may choose to skip the crossing and boulder hop along the west shore, although it's probably easier overall to make the wet crossing. Your choice. After the second crossing, hike a short switchback through a stand of lodgepole pine before emerging into the clearings at the south end of New Fork Park. Ra Mountain is to the northwest.
