Description

Dynamite Shacks is one of two bouldering areas near the east entrance of Colorado National Monument (the other being Bullet Hole Rock Area). The boulders are Dakota sandstone, and vary in difficulty from V-easy to V8ish. The area is generally dry and climbable most of the year, although rain and snowmelt will make the hillsides the consistency of peanut butter. There is a lot of opportunity for route development in the area.

Getting There

From Grand Junction, travel west on Grand Avenue, which turns into Broadway. Cross over two bridges, at the next stop light turn left on to Monument Road, follow the signs to the Colorado National Monument, go approximately 1.5 miles, there will be a large gravel parking lot on the left marked with a BLM sign for the Tabeguache Trail. Dynamite Shacks is across the road from the Tabeguache parking area. There is a small, rutted out, parking area on the right side of the road as well.

Yes, thanks for reorganizing the area. As a visiting climber, it was a little tricky to figure out the area during my first visit. I really like the beta photo you added that gives a great overview of the boulders. Much appreciated! Apr 3, 2015

Thanks, Nick! I hope it's at least somewhat helpful to folks who might be new to the area! Riggs Hill is next, I suppose! Apr 3, 2015

This morning the WCCC painted over the graffiti on the old explosive bunkers out at the Shacks. The City of Grand Junction supplied the paint as part of our joint effort to clean up the area. There is still graffiti to be removed from some of the boulders, but we wanted to get the painting done before it got too cold and we had to wait till spring. We’ll get to the graffiti on the boulders soon. Happy climbing, everyone. Oct 22, 2012

The WCCC had a great turn out yesterday and a lot of trash and broken glass got picked up. We also fixed the trail to the Upper Band that had washed out in several places. The trail starts just before you get to the Warm Up Boulder (Easy Flake, YO-TAN-CHI-LA) and achieves the ridge next to the Vodka Boulder, follow the cairns. There is still a lot of trash and broken glass to be picked up of course; this was only the first step.

The WCCC is coming to an agreement with the city to take care of the Dynamite Shacks and Bullet Hole (both are city property). The city has been very receptive and excited about the WCCC wanting to take care of this land. The future should see some vast improvements to this area making it cleaner, safer, and free of graffiti. Jul 29, 2012

The Western Colorado Climbers' Coalition will be having a trail day a Dynamite Shacks on Saturday, July 28th. We plan on cleaning up, trail building, and doing some erosion control. We will supply a grill and some items to cook up for volunteers. People are encouraged to bring a dish to share as well. We will begin at 4:00 PM. Please bring plenty of water, gloves, and any trail building tools you might have. There will be some goodies there to give out to volunteers provided by the Access Fund, REI, Summit Canyon, and other donors. Bring your bouldering pads and climbing shoes as there will be time for some fun on the rock! If you have any questions/comments, please email at: western_co_climbers@hotmail.com. Hope to see you all there!~ Jul 9, 2012
