One can do a long traverse of Black Rock, on the face that faces the ocean. I swam by and saw a trail of chalk, so I had to do it. You can either go north to south, or south to north. Going from south to north makes the start/getting out the water easier. The chalk was never more than 10-15 feet above the water. The climbing is pretty fun, but BRING SHOES!!! The lava is very sharp and painful on your feet (I did it barefoot and cut my feet up a little). Bunch of variations possible. The route I did was probably no harder than 5.10. Lots of fun! Very fun and a good place to snorkel too. The crux is pulling out of the water, after that the climbing doesn't get harder than 5.9. If you are going to do it more than once (and you will) then swim out with your shoes. The rock is so sharp that the shoes helped even when wet. The best part was the tourists jumping over my head while I was climbing. Nov 27, 2010

Where to park:
Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa
2605 Ka'anapali Parkway
Lahaina, HI 96761

There is free parking there but it's kind of hidden and parking is limited in the garage. There are like 10 spaces. Also, to get access to the beach, you walk though the Sheraton walk way outside. Just a note: they don't check to see if you are a guest or not when it comes to the pool and hot tub ;). So after a few climbs and swimming, it's kind of nice to be able to chill in their hot tubs :)

From the resort, walk out to the beach. You will see a lot of rock formations to the right.

If you google map and choose satellite view: Black Rock Swim, Lahaina, HI 96761
You will see the rock is just south of that marker.

There are two options to getting to the rock. You can swim to it or you can walk from the beach on to the top of the rock. Either way, you have to start the route from in the water, so it's your choice to swim up to it or do a 20ft cliff jump. Both are fun options.

Come with water or climbing shoes. The rock is sharp.

This isn't a video of me, but some other guy...wish I got my own footage :P… Oct 4, 2014
We parked directly next to the resort tennis courts. The "in" gate was up so we went in and out through that gate to park.

It's a fun and popular spot for cliff jumping and snorkeling. We ran up the short, easy climbs below the many cliff jumpers. The rock is sharp, but not extremely so, and the holds on the easy climbs are solid jugs. Dec 30, 2016
I just climbed this in May 2017. Was fantastic - easy climbing on the left and right sides with some more technical stuff up the main face.
I also made a video guide for the climb here:… Jun 2, 2017
