Description
The spires are a group of boulders and cliffs located around Lolo Pass. The largest of these rocks is around 300 feet in height. Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Rho are the major formations in the area with Alpha being the largest. The rocks are closely grouped so I will post distinguishing features individually for each crag.
Getting There
From Missoula, head south on 93. Take a right at Lolo onto 12 and take a right onto Crooked Fork Road (less than 0.25 miles east of the visitor center on top of Lolo Pass).
Upper Approach: Drive up Crooked Fork Road about 4.2 miles to a pull off on the road just before a sharp left hand turn. Park here and follow an old road toward the northeast then turn right off the old road to continue northeast past loads of holes dug in the ground by people looking for crystals. Continue northeast until you run into an old logging road. Turn left and follow this road until you reach the base of Rho on your right. Delta is a little further down on the left. Gamma is further down and then a short hike down on the right. Alpha is even further and may have an alternate approach that I am unaware of.
The lower approach previously noted on this page and in the guidebook is extremely overgrown and not worth mentioning here.
