There was a climbing accident at Devil's Lake on Saturday, Sept 16th and I heard that someone died. I haven't been able to find any more information about the accident in the news or anything (I was there that day, climbing on the other side of the lake). Does anyone know anything about this accident?

This was in the Baraboo New Republic today.

Inexperienced climber without climbing gear. Our paper calls everyone a "climber" once they get off the main trails.

Channel3000 web page article states the 24 year old victum was a rock climber and fell while rock climbing????

Strange that the stories don't quite match????

The Wednesday Spt.20th 2006 edition of Wisconsin State Journal Local section page D3 has an article which backs up the Baraboo paper notice and states "Man dies after fall at Devil's Lake". They have made an effort not to call the victum a rock climber in the caption- whaich is correct for once it seems. The article states the two people involved in the incident were "inexperienced climbers and did not have climbing gear" so atleast they have clarified somewhat the truth of the matter there yet still calling them climbers for some reason....

Very sad to hear about this non the less......

The boyfriend of my co-worker's cousin was the victim of that fall. He told me about it shortly after it occurred. Supposedly, the 'climber' died of head trauma. He was still conscious when the girl reached him. She left for help, and he was dead when they returned. I don't know if they were climbing without ropes, or if they were just scrambling over the rocks and he just happened to take a nasty fall. That was not made clear to me. I've been to Devil's lake many times, and have been in some tight situations myself just going over rocks and places I probably shouldn't have gone (though this was a real long time ago when I was just a little kid) What the papers and news people say does not mean that the people involved in this accident were attempting actual climbing routes without ropes. To them, a six-year-old scrambling up a rocky slope is a 'climber'.
But it's still very sad that it happened.

I know a guide that was leading a climbing group when this accident occured. He said he was on the next rock face over, just out of sight. He told me that the victim had seen them climbing and wanted to try it out. Apparently that is what he was doing when he fell. He was just a hiker, and had no intention on climbing when he came that day. He mentioned that he had seen many other climbing groups that day and was very interested to learn more. I guess curiousity got to him. Anyway, Once again: He was just a normal hiker w/o any climbing experiece and had absolutly no equipment. Also, the local paper considers anyone attempting to climb a "rock climber". In the paper i believe it said he was a climber, but that is not true he was just a hiker trying to climb.

I talked with my co-worker again about the incident and tried to get some more info about it. According to him, the guy's girlfreind fell behind, and he walked up to a ledge to look for her below. He lost his balance and fell over down the 20 something foot face. The girlfreind (co-worker's cousin) watched this happen. They were just hiking, not climbing or attempting to climb anything.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
