Bishop - Mammoth scramble routes Thanksgiving?

Is it worth bringing my "class 4 easy 5" scrambling gear for visiting next week starting Tuesday?

I've heard some of the high ridge crests are mostly snow-free sometimes in winter. (any hints about which ones?)

Other concerns are how deep snow might be on approach trails. I'm thinking maybe bring my ski boots so I don't get my Guide Tennie approach shoes all wet before I even reach the rock. Is it just a few patches of deeper snow -- or sustained sections where I'd really want snowshoes?

Plowing to trailhead parking? I'd rather avoid a long gentle slog into and out from a summer trailhead (e.g. East Fork parking into Mosquito Flat in Rock Creek). How close might I drive to South Lake? (if Hurd Peak or Cloudripper is worth trying now)

I'm guessing that I'd have to park much lower than Lake George if I wanted to do the Crystal Crag ridge.

Or are there some other fun scrambles farther south (beyond Whitney?) or lower altitude, where snow would not be an issue?

Thanks for ideas about this.

Ken

P.S. of course I'm also going to do several days of sport climbing or bouldering.

Great to be out yesterday. Went in to Rock Creek. Road clear and dry all the way to Mosquito Flats parking. Trail very walkable, though with some previous-walker-packed snow on it, sometmes icy. I started after noon (after some logistics to take care of just arrived in Bishop last night), little wind and great sunshine, so I was soon down to short-sleeves.
My intention was to explore the W approach to the SW ridge of Little Lakes Peak. But I had done my altitude-acclimatization prep only partially for this trip, and it immediately obvious that I just didn't have it yet. So I settled for some good photos of some climbing routes and a hike up to Morgan Pass -- so I could see for myself if S face was a reasonable descent route for future climbing on Little Lake Peak. It was completely snow-free.
Lost the sun around 3:30, so the trail was icier going out.

Though I could see some snow up on the higher peaks, looked like some climbing routes on ridges might be mostly snow-free, for those who might dare some alpine rock on a non-windy day over Thanksgiving - (I'll see if I get time to post some photos).

Other trailheads:

  • Mammoth Lakes (for Crystal Crag) -- I heard the road is now gated at Twin Lakes, but above mostly snow-free, might be some icy patches.
  • South Lake (for Hurd Peak or Cloudripper) -- I heard it's mostly snow-free and ungated to the end. Some icy patches in shady spots.

Might be getting out again as early as Thursday (or might be resting from hard sport climbing today).
