We wanted to share an update on an upcoming change to the website.
As Mountain Project continues to grow, so do the costs of maintaining and improving both the site and app. To support that work in a more sustainable way, we’ll be experimenting with an updated approach to ads on Mountain Project. This will mean moving away from primarily onX-focused placements and introducing a more curated, diverse set of outdoor-related ads to the site.
We know ads can affect how a site feels, and we’re approaching this change with care. We’ve heard from many of you that earlier ads and onX pop-ups, in particular, have been a recurring annoyance. We’ve been listening and making adjustments, and our intent moving forward is to be more restrained and thoughtful: limiting the number of ads, placing them carefully, and prioritizing relevance over volume. It may take some tweaking to get this right, but our goal is to deliver ads in a way that doesn’t disrupt your experience or get in the way of quickly accessing the climbing info you're here for.
Evolving our ad program is part of a broader effort to find a healthier balance between supporting ongoing development that makes Mountain Project better for climbers, learning through experimentation, and connecting the community with products, places, and services that may be genuinely relevant or interesting.
Our goal remains the same: to support the long-term sustainability and accessibility of Mountain Project while preserving the experience that makes it feel like home for climbers.
