Mountain Project founded a diversity and inclusion group that is seeking members from underrepresented communities. In this volunteer position, an individual will be able to create change and work on new ideas for Mountain Project that will make climbing more welcoming and accessible to BIPOC, LGBTQ+ climbers, adaptive climbers, and their intersectionalities.
Mountain Project is actively working on making changes that show commitment to climbers in our diverse communities. In addition to launching this new volunteer initiative, Mountain Project’s plans include:
Participating in a new group composed of diverse and representative set of climbing nonprofits, diversity nonprofits, members of the BIPOC community, first ascensionists, corporate leaders, professional climbers, and Mountain Project. Among the goals of this working group is addressing the systemic issue of racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, and homophobic behaviors in climbing culture.
Working with this new climbing group to review potentially discriminatory names.
MP staff and internal volunteers have redacted 700 route names that have been deemed overtly discriminatory and in need of quicker action.
While our volunteer group has separate initiatives from those above, we are still impacting change. We seek to add resources and information to the website that make climbing more accessible and welcoming to underrepresented groups. Some of our more recent projects included:
Establishing stricter guidelines for interaction that include zero-tolerance for discrimination, bullying, name calling, or hostile language.
Creating a survey to learn more about the communities we serve and what we can do to help.
Aligning the Mountain Project admin community with goals of inclusion and diversity.
And we have more projects in the works. But we need your help.
As a member of our group, you will be able to help us build up resources for climbers that will help foster a better community. You have an opportunity for your voice to be heard and acted upon, and you will be able to see the direct effects of your work.
Group members are asked to dedicate 1 to 3 hours of work to the group a week and are expected to attend a weekly meeting. In return, you can create change across the board and speak your mind freely in a safe space!
