Description
The Gemstone hosts a couple of long and liberally-bolted easy/moderate routes in a beautiful setting. It's a small, sunny crag of high-quality white granite tucked within a literal mountainside of choss. The views are spectacular and the approach is shorter than most Red Lodge areas.
Getting There
Leaving Red Lodge, drive West on Highway 212 as for the Beartooth Pass. About 12 miles out of town you will reach Main Fork of Rock Creek Road on your right. Drive 3.5 miles to a bridge over Rock Creek (1 mile past the first entrance to M-K Campground) and take the next right into the large meadow with several dispersed campsites. The walk begins from the furthest campsite back.
Walk directly uphill from the furthest campsite from the road, passing two large boulders after a couple of minutes. Continue uphill, staying among the large fir trees and off of the taus on either side. Follow this to the base of the wall. The walk should take 10-25 minutes.
