Description
A good place to avoid the crowds and the sun on summer afternoons. The Hideout hosts several high-quality steep and hard sport routes among many easier/moderate routes. There's something here for everyone with climbs ranging from 5.4 to 5.12+. Initial development took place in 2018/2019 and was significantly slowed down when the Bighorn fire obliterated the trail. After much work in 2021 to make access possible once more, The Hideout is now open to all who wish to find it.
Getting There
Drive to the top of Incinerator Ridge Road (closed to vehicles Dec 15 - Mar 15). Hike Northwest on the AZT for about 0.2 miles. Just before the trail takes a left turn with views of Tucson, head right into the forest, looking for a ramp of rock about 100-200 feet North of the trail. Ascend this ramp and then follow the obvious path for a half mile of steep downhill switchbacks. Arriving at the top of the wall, the trail descends the drainage to the left (North), and wraps around to the base of the wall. While the hike in is relatively easy (downhill), you'll earn your beer for the day on the hike out. Some fixed ropes exist on the trail. These aren’t typically needed but can be helpful if you get caught in a monsoon.
