Description

The Practice Cliff is a top-rope area popular with beginning climbers, recreational rappellers, and the local guide services. It's a place to introduce a beginner to climbing as the lines here fall in the 5.3-5.6 range at most.

It is also directly below the Windy Point Overlook, so watch out for rocks and litter thrown by tourists above. I strongly recommend a rope-bag or tarp, as broken glass at the base of this crag is the norm.

Getting There

From Windy Point Overlook, hike/scramble/ski downhill and around east to base of Practice Wall. The toprope anchors are accessed by scrambling back up the way you came and cutting across ledge.

I know the approach is extremely short, but I think this bit of detail would be helpful for someone new to the area:

As you cross the street from the parking area and approach the stone wall take a left. Follow the sidewalk until the wall ends turn right and immediately turn right again to go down the wash for about 20 ft. Walk out to the cliff from here and you will see the anchors to practice wall to your left. Feb 2, 2014

definitely agree.......great place to take a beginner if youre in the area......i probably wouldnt drive all the way there just for this wall with a noob though. first day i got to tuscon, we drove up mt lemmon and stopped at hitchcock. after rapping from the spire, a hot chick started asking questions, said she always wanted to try climbing. she was a stewardess on vacation with her parents. took her across the road to the practice cliff, she did great, got a phone#, very cool chick.... unfortunately, when i got home, the napkin it was written on became bedding for my theiving pet squirrel who grabbed whatever shredable objects she could to make herself more comfy.......alas, it would not be the last of the hot chick phone numbers i would lose to her.....at least this one i would never run into again to be shunned for never calling......they never believe the squirrel story.....
