Pointless Crag

Idaho > E Idaho

Description

A southwest facing basalt crag above the South Fork of the Snake River, Pointless saw development in the fall of 2011 by Dean and Heather Lords. With help from a few other locals, Dean put up a handful of short, fun routes. During the spring of 2012, Dean and Heather were at it again, quickly establishing about 10 additional lines. Routes at Pointless are remarkably varied. From short, obvious and moderate to long, deceptive and challenging, there is something for everyone. The rock has naturally cleaned up after a season of climbing and will continue to do so. However, the sudden removal of large blocks is still an issue so climbers and particularly belayers, be smart and don't stand in the fall zone.
Like the other areas nearby, one should always keep an eye out for rattlesnakes.
Park only in established parking and please pick up any trash, yours or otherwise.
A stick-clip is very handy for many of the routes here.
PLEASE NOTE: THE SAME ETIQUETTE THAT APPLIES ELSEWHERE APPLIES HERE. DO NOT TOP ROPE ON ANCHORS. I'VE SEEN A NUMBER OF NEW PARTIES TO THE AREA TAKING LAPS ON THE FIXED ANCHORS. PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE OF THE TIME, EFFORT, AND MONEY SPENT IN DEVELOPING OUR LOCAL CLIMBING AREAS. MINIMIZE WEAR AND TEAR BY TOP ROPING ON YOUR OWN GEAR. ONLY THE LAST CLIMBER OF THE GROUP SHOULD CLIMB OR LOWER ON ANCHORS.
THANK YOU FOR TAKING CARE OF OUR CRAG!

Getting There

Take the River Road (first right after Heise Rock) and follow it past Stinking Springs and Wolf Flats. Pointless is about a quarter mile past Wolf Flats.

The black basalt rock really heats up in the sun which means it can be pretty miserable mid-day during the summer, but it also means that you can basically climb here all year as long as it is a dry and sunny day

[Hide Comment] FYI: the top of the cliff is part of the Stinking Springs closure between November 15th till April 30th. So, during that time, hiking to the top to set top ropes is illegal and top ropes can only be set on lead. Climb on and let’s keep access open! Mar 12, 2018
[Hide Comment] Fantastic crag. Steep, pumpy, great movement on solid rock. The bolting is really well done. Spectacular setting with the snake river flowing nearby. The route developers have done a great job here. There is still a ton of potential to ad more routes which I’m sure will occur. With its West facing direction one can avoid the heat of the day with an early start. Apr 22, 2018

[Hide Comment] Not sure what “Do not top rope on anchors” means. I though the whole point of the two bolts at the top are to top rope with either two of your own carabiners or quick draws. Does it mean do not put your top rope directly through the bolted clips with no carabiner? Sorry for my ignorance. Jul 5, 2018

[Hide Comment] Roger, that is exactly what it means. Only run the rope through your own gear on TR. Aug 6, 2018
[Hide Comment] There has been some trail development recently. Please be careful and cautious around new trails and belay platforms while they set naturally. May 8, 2024

[Hide Comment] Amazing crag! We had a new family today kicking loose rocks off the top near that 5.8 where the trail hits the crag. They walked around and were rapping. Really sketchy and I told the dad to have his kids stop kicking them and he was being overly casual about it. His wife and daughter were at the base where the rocks were falling and I was on the 11b next to them watching the rocks fly by mine and my party’s head. I doubt they’ll see this but please be cautious and don’t kick huge rocks off the top while there are party’s climbing. lol. The ignorance in this valley is stunning mates! Those who see this BS please speak up as these types of people kill others. Cheers and enjoy this amazing gem of a crag. Aug 31, 2024
