Upper Satellite Boulders

Colorado > Boulder > Flatirons > North
Warning Access Issue: 2024 Crag Closures & Temporary Trail and Raptor Closures DetailsDrop down

Description

The Upper Satellite bouldering area is an excellent place to cool down in the summer heat and beat the crowds. You will rarely see other people there, very secluded. Plenty of nice tall free-standing boulders sit within a minutes walk from eachother. The boulders sit several hundred feet higher in elevation than the regular Satellite boulders, and are a little bit cooler in temps. During the winter months, not much sun hits the area so climbing can be a bit cold and snowy. Located in between the Second and Third Flatirons, most of the boulders actually sit right next to the Second Flatiron, in a water drainage. If you head towards the Third Flatiron away from the main boulders, you will run into a few good problems in the scree field, where several nice large boulders lean against eachother, creating some nice short steep lines.

Getting There

Follow the same directions as for the regular Satellite boulders. When you get there, hike up the main trail passing the BBC boulder and the problem "Turningpoint" off to your right. Hike about 5 minutes until you see a faint trail heading steep to the right. Take that trail and after a couple minutes this will take you up a small ridge and into the drainage right at the base of the Second Flatiron. From there hike another 10-15 minutes straight up the drainage. You can't miss the boulders. You'll first encounter the route "Halley's Comet" on a large boulder sitting right in the drainage, all the other boulders are just uphill about 1 minute. The problems in the scree field are located just south of Halley's Comet, about 1 minute as well. Enjoy!

Stewardship

Eds. Please consider minimizing your impact when enjoying the area. There are already signs of erosion, plant trampling, etc. Do your best to ensure future access to this wonderful area!
