RAIN, WET ROCK and RAPTOR CLOSURES: The sandstone around Moab is fragile and is very easily damaged when it is wet. Also please ask and be aware of Raptor Closures in areas such as CAT WALL and RESERVOIR WALL in Indian Creek MORE INFO >>>

Description

An obvious butte which sits about a mile NE of Echo Tower and two miles north of The Monitor.

The butte is about 500 meters long (north to south) and 100 meters wide. It's high point is at the southern end where there are two summits, the northern of which is higher.

Despite being very visible from non-obscure towers (Echo, Aeolian, Monitor and Merrimac), this butte had apparently been left alone by rock climbers, probably as a result of its non-phallic appearance and soft rock. The rock is softer than what I've encountered on Monitor, Merrimac and Echo and on par with the feeble upper layer of Aeolian.

After making what we presumed was the first ascent of the butte, Ali Conrad and I gave it a name in keeping with its neighbors to the south.

Getting There

With 4WD, one could drive to within about a quarter mile of the south end of the butte.

From the southern spur of Mill Canyon Road (2WD), turn to the south at 38.7080 -109.7228. Proceed south over slickrock and sand for about two miles, then turn right/west at 38.6770, -109.7275. After about a mile, turn right/north at 38.6694,-109.7428. At 38.6768,-109.7438 there is a hard to see turn to the right/northeast which leads to a slickrock jeep trail (white paint blazes) which goes most of the rest of the way to the butte. Looking at satellite imagery should clarify this drive.

A somewhat jingus "easy first route to the top". It would be less jingus if we hadn't had to back clean some of our bolts.Note on bolting: we were experimenting with some Hilti threaded screws (3/8"x3") that had been recommended instead of expansion bolts for very soft rock. They worked, but they came loose very easily. The first pitch has five empty 3/8"x3" holes and the last pitch one....[more]   Browse More Classics in Utah
