RAIN AND WET ROCK The sandstone in Red Rocks is fragile and is very easily damaged when it is wet. MORE INFO >>>

The boulder fields on the east and south sides of Windy Peak are filled with varnished sandstone, which makes for high quality bouldering. The slightly more involved approach makes for a very secluded area.

Getting There

From the intersection of SR 159 and SR160, drive 5.7 miles west on SR160, cross a cattle guard on the right onto a dirt road. 0.7 miles from the cattle guard, the road makes a sharp right, turning northwest. At 1.7 miles from the cattle guard, there is a parking pullout on the left. The road is marked with BLM fiberglass signs. A trail leads from the pullout, which brings one to the Warm Up Boulder after about a 20 minute hike.

It was our first time into Windy Canyon- we followed tire tracks and ended up missing the first turn onto the dirt road. We saw the trail marker while we were driving up, but we had not quite reached .7mi from the highway, so we decided to keep following the tire tracks and continued up the wash. Bad idea.
The wash gets really shitty to drive on, without many places to turn around.

Also worth mentioning, our Outback made it back to the highway just fine using what is considered the "high clearance" road (without bottoming out AT ALL).
