Scavenger hunt in the Gulch.

Whiskey Gulch is an enormous, incredible granite bouldering area. With a wide range of grades, heights (lots of highballs here at all grades), angles, and styles, it is a place just about anyone can enjoy.

Boulders face all aspects, so as long as you can get to the parking lot, you should be able to find something that is climbable year round.

At large camping is available, as much of the area is National Forest. Practice your best LNT principles and pack out your trash. Be careful of the private property in the area as well.

The "SW MT Blocs" Guidebook contains this area, and I'd highly recommend it. It has good descriptions, maps, and directions for the Whiskey Gulch area.

Getting There

Finding the parking lot is actually harder than finding the boulders! The GPS location listed is for the parking lot. I'll try to list some text directions in the event your GPS doesn't want to get you there.

From either Butte or Whitehall, get on MT-2. Turn north on Toll Mountain Road. From here on out, you will stay on the "main" road, with a few exceptions. When the road Y's, turn right on to Upper Rader Creek Road (following signs for Whiskey Gulch Trailhead). Stay on this road for awhile and it will make a hard left downhill turn. Keep going straight. When the road Y's once again, keep left (heading uphill). A white arrow on a brown sign should point the correct way. After awhile longer, you will reach yet another Y. This one has a sign that says Whiskey Gulch Trailhead and points left. DO NOT go this way. Head to the right instead. After a short distance you will see a grassy parking area on your left. Keep going (unless the road is bad), turning left onto a smaller, less maintained road. DO NOT go right here as there are signs for private property. After 0.3 miles on the smaller road, you'll see a grass parking area on the right. Park here! You're just minutes from the boulders now.
