Description

The Vector Madness Wall is a somewhat secluded area on the other side of the Geezer Wall. Where the Geezer Wall faces Dead Snag and Glass Ocean, Vector Madness is in the next gully over to the east. It faces NE and consequently has ample shade.

It is a seldom visited area, so the routes tend to be a bit licheny at the bottom, but with good rock higher up.

Getting There

Take the Challenge Buttress trail up to the Dead Snag/Steort's buttress, then angle east a bit. Avoid the gully between Geezer Wall and the Glass Ocean; if you can see either, you're in the wrong gully.

There is a faint trail bearing SE which eventually peters out in a small alcove -- bear east again and make your way up the next gully. The gully is wide and somewhat choked with talus and vegetation, with a prominent rock fin bordering it to the west. This fin of rock gets progressively taller higher up the gully; eventually Vector Madness can be seen as a shallow dihedral capped by a roof on the left.

Plan 20-30 minutes for the approach.

The pitch off the ground is short, but a 5.8-5.9 climber will find it packed: balancy face climbing on a blunt arête, a stimulating traverse over a drop-off, and a roof band with surprisingly good holds. (1) Climb the arête past three bolts to good cams. Continue up until possible to traverse right under and eventually over the roofband. Belay from the anchors for Vector Madness/Vertical Component (but keep in mind the swing potential for your second). 60 feet. (2) Step right an...[more]   Browse More Classics in Utah

Anchor could use an overhaul -- left one is a spinner and the right a rusty (though solid-looking) buttonhead. Slings are faded and could use replacing, though the fixed biners are convenient. Most (all?) of the bolts up the routes are buttonheads as well.

I'm fairly sure the buttonheads on Vertical/Vector are 5/16", but in any event they appear to be in good shape, albeit old. A bolt and chains have been installed on top; one rap with a 70 meter rope can get you down from there. The lower anchors also have been replaced.

The Vector Madness Wall has cleaned up quite a bit since the crag write-up was posted. The wall is approached by a good trail from either the Challenge Buttress parking area or the Stairs Gulch parking area across from the Storm Mountain picnic area. Follow either approach to the base of Dead Snag (Steorts' Ridge), then continue up the switchback to the left and up for about 75' where the trail splits. The trail heading slightly right goes to Geezer Wall and Glass Ocean and the trail heading hard left goes to Vector Madness Wall and Buena Vista Wall. It takes 15-20 minutes to get to Vector Madness Wall from either the Challenge Buttress parking area or the Stairs Gulch parking area.

Found a pair of belay gloves on the ledge below Doubling the Cube this morning, and a brand new quick draw hanging on a nearby route a few days earlier. PM me if they are your's and I'll get them to you.
