Upper Tier - Tony on Saul's Crack. Hen Cloud is in...

The main part of this is a big piece for grit, while most routes are 1 pitch long there are some traditional 2 pitch routes here. It's a wonderful spot, a real climber's Mecca. Classics here include Saul's Crack, Black and Tans, and The Sloth.

There are some good boulder problems here too.

Getting There

Hike up the muddy trail then left past the Don Whillans Memorial Hut, then right through the trees past the Lower Tier on the right and, with stomach churning, up the steps to arrive at the right margin of the Upper Tier.

After the first ascent when asked by a dumbfounded bystander how he did it Don Whillans replied with; "it's OK if you use yer loaf." Leaving the bystander wondering if Don had actually used his loaf (head) as a climbing technique. This is one of the great grit roofs, and, I think, the first to be climbed. Another total classic - but pretty gripping!1) 80ft 5.9. Up the left side of the Pedestal to it's top and a ledge, now a tricky wall 'till beneath the roof, sling over The Cheeseblock....[more]   Browse More Classics in International
