Description
The unique atmosphere of the upper gorge can be claustrophobic for some, while it is considered a mecca of ice and mixed climbing for others. Steep icy walls on both sides of the gorge insure for good conditions most of the season. The long routes in the upper gorge are classics known on an international level, with climbers from all over the world traveling to Rjukan just to get a shot at climbing in the upper gorge.
Getting There
There are several approach options, but the two most useful are the following:
1. Park near Vemork Bridge and take the steep path down into the gorge.
2. Use the parking near Krokan, just past the tunnel, near the DNT cabin. Go back towards the tunnel and hop over the fence and rappel from trees down into the gorge. Beware of ice covered by snow. Crampons are advised during the descent.
