Upper Falls Wall with the falls in the background.

This is the first major wall you'll come to while hiking in from Shenandoah. It's a west facing cliff ~80ft high at the base of the overlook for the upper falls. Be warned: the northern section of the wall (closest to the falls,) is at the base of a prominent overlook, so tourons may occasionally drop rocks or other debris from above. Your anchor may also be accessible to hikers. The further south (downstream,) you go along the wall, the less accessible the top is to hikers.

Really high quality rock for the most part, though there are several large blocks that should be trundled. All trad or TR, and easy to set anchors on the trees at the top of the wall.

Getting There

Hiking in from Shenandoah, it's ~2 miles to the upper falls. Cross the river and head to the overlook. You can scramble down the west side of the falls, (4th class,) or follow the trail south down the stone steps until it reaches the river below, backtracking upstream to reach the base of the wall.

One of the best routes on the wall. It starts with fingers, moves to hands, then to an off-width fist/stack as it reaches the cruxy roof. Once you pass the roof there's a second crux with an awkward mantle, then smooth sailing. Watch for the massive loose block making up the right side of the crack just below the roof....[more]   Browse More Classics in Virginia
