This Upper Crag area of the Ermita de Betlem consists of a large wall made of a notably white limestone. The texture in places can feel chalky or dusty, making good footwork essential. The center section (where there is a trough when viewing to top line of the cliff) has some tufas and many of the harder routes in this area (up to 5.13). Left of center on this wall has the more moderate 5.9 to 5.10 climbs.

This wall receives a lot of early afternoon shade, but can get some setting sunlight again in the evening. The wall also offers some beautiful views of the Hermitage Chapel and the Badia d'Alcúdia bay.

Getting There

After following the dirt road from the main street to Ermita de Betlem, there is a second gate. Here a path descends to the right to the crag. The path will bend around with the Warm-up wall on the left.

Slightly further, the Upper Crag will be on the left. The path is discernible, but not marked, and it passes through some tall grasses and shrubberies that can hide the way. Keep an eye out for ways up and left towards the now visible wall, as descending too far may result in scrambling around on rocks that may be almost entirely hidden by the grasses.

Notice: there are ticks in the tall grasses surrounding the crag, so it's a good practice to check yourself during or at the end of your visit.

This climbs up the clean white wall to a round hole where the anchors are. For most, the main crux will be relatively low with some balancey moves. The middle brings some thin cracks, and towards the top is another crux, which may be more stamina than technical, before grabbing onto a great flake-jug....[more]   Browse More Classics in International
