Description

This beautiful mountain leaves the valley which is home to some excellent rock climbing and the training grounds of David Lama. Speaking of which, if you want a climbing course with David Lama, come to this area for it.
Anyway, most people come here for the hiking. First, I'd like to point out that this is not the wild lands of America, where when you go out into the mountains, you can expect to have to fend for yourself. There are lots of inns in the mountains which provide food and a place to sleep, so if you are planning a climbing trip here, check your chosen route and figure out if you're going to be staying in one of the Hütten or not. It will make a HUGE difference in the weight of your backpack and thus, your overall trip experience.
This area has multipitch, single pitch, and bouldering options. If you're coming from America, you might want to do a few routes on the Grand Tetons or Wind River Range before flying out here to tackle some of the bigger routes because they're logistically difficult. The mountains are very steep, so wear good hiking boots to get up and down the mountain, and try to keep your load to a minimum. If you're staying in the Hütten, all you need is a liter of water and a small snack, plus any climbing gear you may need. With 3 hour approach times, you have to be really hardcore to not be staying in the Hütten.

Getting There

Since this is the age of GPS, I'm not going to tell you directions to Umhausen. Just know that you have to get to Umhausen, which is West-Southwest of Innsbruck (see map). From there, plan your trip based on the route you're going to do. More detailed approaches are provided in the route descriptions.
