Alex Honnold At Tick Rock.

Description

Tick Rock is an "urban crag" situated smack in the middle of the upscale Pacific Palisades community, between Santa Monica and Malibu. The rock is heavily fractured and featured fine grained sandstone. The rock and the routes are more reminiscent of the granite of Riverside Quarry or Big Rock then the usual sandstone of Southern California.

The routes at Tick Rock are in the shade in the early morning and the afternoon, making it perfect for half day outings. There are seventeen documented routes and variations.

A steep trail leads up and over a small hill to the base, making for a short ten minute approach. Jack Marshall, Doniel Drazin, Steve Edwards, Louie Anderson, and Jeff Constine contributed to route development.

Shady after 2:30 p.m. Cool all summer! High-strength sandstone.

Getting There

PCH to Sunset. Turn left on Palisades Dr. Park in a small turnout on the left about 1.5 miles up Palisades Dr. The top of the cliff and the start of the climber's trail are visible from the pullout. 30-second approach.

Seemed like an ok place. Enjoyed climbing in the shade during the pm hours! Good, sturdy rock. Very challenging in the middle on the main wall.

Any ideas on being able to use part of area for a top rope to get my 7 year old daughter some practice since it is so much closer to us than Stoney Point and Malibu Creek. Haven't actually been to the site yet, but live in Santa Monica.

Thanks!

Just PM me I will meet you at tick. You can't go on top of tick to set up a TR, way loose and unsafe. You must lead a route to set up TR's

Does anyone have any info on the boulder at Tick Rock? There's chalk on the holds but unsure if anyone has named or graded the lines. I played with this line yesterday which goes with a ground start at probably v6 or maybe v4/v5 starting with your butt off the ground. I could be way off. Anyway, a super fun little boulder

Might want to change the name to Saddle Peak, since that's where this is. This place was developed by the same guys who did Tick Rock but they've disappeared so no route info is known. Very cool place for what it is.

This post was made by Steve Edwards (RIP) regarding the naming of Saddle Peak (or the Corpse Wall) and he makes reference to the development of Tick Rock. Who was responsible for the initial development of Tick Rock?
Can anyone share some history/chronology behind the development of Tick Rock?

Just climbed Tick Rock this morning. Be aware that there was a recent LARGE landslide that wiped out most of the belay terraces and steps that had been created over years. We shoveled out the little terrace below the "Original Route" quite a bit but decide to actually build a belayer anchor just to keep from accidentally falling down the landslide while belaying each other.

The bottom belay bench had big 20-30 lb rocks on it but cleaned up fairly well. Mostly intact. The area right in from of the main face is still clear.

All routes on the main face were climbable and clean. In fact, the rains made the rock the cleanest I've ever seen it here.

Exercise caution because it looks like there's a lot more earth ready to come down the hillside above the rock and the existing landslide is still unstable.

If anyone (Jeff!) wants to do a work day there to rebuild trails and terraces I'm totally on board. Let me know.

See attached photos.
