The Thunder Bay region hosts many long-standing classic ice, mixed, and rock routes, as well as a lot of new development, mostly in the rock climbing arena. Most Thunder Bay's ice and mixed climbing is concentrated on steep faces of Mount McKay and Mount McRae. The impressive ice lines on the northwestern face of Mount McRae are easily visible from Provincial Route 61 just south of Thunder Bay.

Getting There

From Duluth, MN, take MN-61N for 148 miles to border crossing. After crossing the border MN-61 N becomes Provincial Route 61 N. Thunder Bay is 35 miles north.

Ice on Mt. McRae is not in at this point.

Also important to know that the routes on Mt. McKay are currently closed due to access issues. They are on reservation land and are currently posted 'no tresspassing'.

Ice in Orient Bay and Kama Bay is in.
