Third Recess Peak Rock Climbing
Third Recess Peak, bathed in glorious morning sunl...
Third Recess is a remote area of the Sierra, and is considered one of the Mono Creek Recesses. There is very little evidence of people. No trash anywhere, and nothing seems trampled. We did not see anyone, or hear anyone, since we turned off the Mono Trail. This area felt very remote, and pristine. Please keep it that way.
We found the weather there to be much different than the Little Lakes Valley and Bear Creek Spire area. For 3 days, big thunderstorms were booming in Little Lakes Valley in the afternoons. We only had a sprinkling of rain in Third Recess.
We found the rock quality on the North Buttress of Third Recess Peak to be good, solid granite. There is a little dirt and growth in the cracks because this thing never gets climbed.
To get there you start out of Mosquito Flat parking lot, just north of Bishop. Trail head is around 10,300 feet. This Little Lakes Valley trail head is fairly crowded. After about 1/4 mile on the trail, you will split off right on the Mono Pass trail. This will take you past Ruby Lake after about 1.5 miles, and then up over Mono Pass (around 12,000 feet) after another 1.5 miles. Elevation now drops down for about 2.5 more miles until you cross a stream from Golden Lake. Continue down past a Fourth Recess turnoff and a Pioneer Basin turnoff sign. After 1.5 more miles past the Basin sign, you will see a split in the trail. It is fairly obvious. This is the Third Recess turnoff. Take the left fork and cross the stream. Elevation here is around 9400 feet and you are now about 2 miles from Third Recess Lake.. Hike up a fairly steep, but good trail. Mono Rock will be on your left. After about a mile the trail becomes much less steep, but also becomes harder to follow. Pay attention and you will be fine. It has tons of growth on the trail itself because it is rarely traveled. Try to minimize your impact to keep it this way. Follow this trail system to Third Recess Lake at about 11,000 feet elevation. The Third Recess Peak is on the other side of the lake. Total elevation gain on the hike in is around 4000 feet. Elevation loss is 3000 feet. The distance from the car to the lake is around 9 miles, maybe 10.

The first 6 pitches of this route are fairly sustained at 5.9, with some 5.10a.This route is fairly easy to find. Go up scree and talus from Third Recess Lake. Head for the toe of the buttress. Look for a right facing dihedral with a roof about 200 feet up. To the right of the roof is kind of an arching feature.P1 - We went up through the chimney system that is just right of this main dihedral, and just under the arch. Belay at a ledge that is just below a small left facing dihedral.P2 - St...[more] Browse More Classics in California
