Description

The Sweat Lodge is a small area in the canyon of the Little PoPo Agie River. It was formed by a massive dolomite flake that has fallen off and is wedged against the main cliff band. It forms an "A-frame" with climbing both on the steep sheltered wall of the flake and on the main formation behind. It is always shady inside the cave. That stated it does get hot in the summer as the crag acts like an oven and without wind it can get stifling inside.

There are only about 15 routes here and it can be kind of a shit show with more than 6-8 climbers. The good climbing starts at 12c and quickly goes up from there. Expect pumpy pocket pulling and crimping. The routes are mostly power endurance type affairs.

I was fortunate enough to discover this crag in 2010 and most of the climbs were established that season. It is a unique place and an awesome hangout. Please be cognizant of your tape, chalk, and other trash as you are basically inside a room while climbing here. In the short time that climbers have been visiting this area it has already become an issue.

Classics include Whiskey Drunk (12c), Training Wheels (13b), Ghost Dance (13c), and the Plastic Shaman (14a).

Getting There

Take Limestone Mountain Road (which is the access to Wild Iris). Drive straight, passing the right turn to the main parking lot. Also pass the parking for the Aspen glades. Continue for several miles. You eventually go down some switch backs and will see the Pass Creek cabin turn off on your left (private access to some cabins). About another mile further take the left turn at a "T" intersection. The road gets significantly less good here. Another half mile leads to the mouth of the Little Popo Agie canyon. Park on the left just before the road crosses Pass Creek. There is a sign for Pass Creek to the left and the hike to the cliff starts right there. Follow this trail for about 20 minutes, staying near the river bed for the first half, then gaining some elevation to eventually end at the crag.
