Description Suggest change

The Strawberry Roan wall is the furthest upstream cliff in the Little Po. It gets its name from the fabulous arête bolted by Todd Skinner in the early nineties. The cliff has still seen only very sporadic development. There could easily be 200 lines here when all is finished. It faces somewhat east (mostly south, but a man can dream) and gets afternoon shade. The cliff is quite windy, which is helpful on summer afternoons.

The Roan itself is the most sought after tick on this cliff.  It is one the most iconic routes in the Lander area, and one of the best. While there are a handful of other very worthy routes on this cliff, the small number of established climbs has limited the number of people willing to venture out to this area.  From right to left, the routes on the Roan buttress are

1. Strawberry Roan, 13c

2.  Blood Meridian 13b

3.  No Country for Old Men (breaks left from #2) 14b

4.  Hellbound 14a

5.  All the Pretty Horses 13d

6.  The Kybosh 14a

Of note, the long routes on the Roan buttress require a seventy meter rope for lowering.  The ground cuts away pretty steeply at the base of the cliff and you lower off about 20 feet below the starts of the routes.

Getting There Suggest change

Approach as for the upper Little Popo Agie cliffs, following Limestone Mountain Road until the confluence of Pass Creek and the Little Po. Instead of parking, ford Pass Creek and continue on through the Little Popo Agie itself.  You can park just before the Little Po and cross the river on foot if your vehicle can't make it through the creek.  If continuing on,  park just before a cattle guard and begin walking from here.

The walking approach follows the fence from the parking to a large boulder.  Next continue up and right for about 20 minutes with a few switchbacks until you arrive at the Roan itself.  Most of the completed routes are on this buttress, but continue left along the cliff band to access the rest of the routes.

The river crossing is impossible in high water (spring or early summer). It is very dangerous to cross on foot and your vehicle would get swept away if you try to drive across.
