The Southern aspect of the western ridge above Mic...

Description

The Sawtooth Range forms the northern flank of Mica Basin, a jagged assemblage of scattered spires, ridges, and isolated rock faces with surprisingly good rock in places.

The ridges above Mica Lake merge to the east with Big Agnes to form a NE-trending spur of more, larger ribs and spires, some of which are several hundred feet in length and contain passages of the best rock in the range.

Names like "the Castle" and the "Incisor" have been attributed to features in this one-half-mile spur which terminates at Peak 11,811. For an excellent photo essay of a traverse of the Sawtooth Range, see Andrew Councell's August 2014 blog: "Colorado's 'Sawtooth Traverse'-Opportunity Knocking."

Getting There

Climbs in the west end can be accessed from Mica Basin. The NE Spur is approached from the Sawtooth-Big Agnes saddle. There were no trails in the 1960s and 1970s, mostly talus, scree and low angled snow. Snow in the upper couloirs can be steep.
