Description

One of the most visually prominent boulders you will notice up the hill as you start to walk the main 'Shortcut Trail" from the small parking lot is this one, with a tall sharp orange arete on the right side Agent Orange Most of the routes are tall (up to almost 25 ft.) and the landings are not so good to horrendous, so some are most sanely enjoyed as top ropes, or at least during a good snowy winter so you can build up a good landing. To that end there are several sets of anchor bolts on the top that can easily be set up with a couple draws or shoulder length slings. Most of the lines are really good, with quite technical moves and tenuous holds up high.

Getting There

Walk the main 'Shortcut Trail' that runs from the small parking lot paralleling the road and in under a minute the huge Shipyard Boulder will be just off trail on your right. Walk under the tall arete of the Shipyard and around back. Now angle right and up the hill ~150 to the obvious big orange boulder.

Please avoid heading directly up the slope to the boulder from the trail when you first see it, as the steep slope will succumb to erosion quickly with traffic. The directions above keeps you walking on stone. Once close to the Orange Arete Bldr., the path angles left, around and up the hill to get to the higher boulders.

Agent Orange V3 6A  New Hampshire : *Rumney : ... : The Orange Arete Boulder
The classic highball sharp righthand orange arete on the big boulder visible from the trail just a minute from the small parking lot. There are two bolts over the top for a toprope, and I recommend that you TR it first. The grade is accurate, but the beta is a bit cryptic and onsight will feel harder. By the way, don't fall....[more]   Browse More Classics in New Hampshire
