Description

It looks like some of the rock features down in this little valley were generated by old quarrying activity. There's some interesting rock up the hill toward the road but nothing really worth trying to climb as far as I could tell. There is one decent boulder though - steep, very geometric, easy on the skin. Seeing as it's two minutes from parking, it's worth checking out. I'm sure folks have been down here and climbed this thing before, so if you know of pre-existing problems, grades, names, FAs, please add to/correct what I have.

Getting There

On the side of Riverside Drive there's a little pull off that will fit three or four cars. If you walked straight away from the road and fell down the big hill, you might roll right up under the boulder. I'd advise going around though. Take the trail to the left that'll take you to the Buttermilk. Head down those stone steps and take a right at the bottom. It'll be on your right.

Start in the V-shaped hold on the right side of the boulder (if you can start lower, go for it). Gain the nice pocket on the arete and snag that top corner. Top out, but be careful what you grab up there, lest you chip the tooth....[more]   Browse More Classics in Virginia
