The Main Wall is a highly concentrated area of easy climbs coupled with easy access to the top, ideal for beginners but with some variety for seasoned climbers and those looking practice rappel or trad technique.

The Main Wall is located on the West Face of Wolf Rock, directly off the main trail. It stretches south from the Wolf’s Head Pillar (located on the NE corner of Wolf Rock) to the ramp of a top access trail. The Main Wall features a variety generally easy climbs up blocky, cracked black rock streaked with white marble. Many of the climbs are 20 feet or less and are hardly more than 5th class scrambles, but a few sections are taller and with interesting features. The routes are slabby and are fun routes for beginner climbers, although numerous crack systems provide numerous gear placement opportunities.

Getting There

From the Park Cantral Road (.9 miles and shortest route): follow the signs! The trail is well-marked but steep and rocky for the first half. The Main Wall will be the first part of Wolf Rock seen from this direction.

From the Visitor Center (1.3 miles): The trail begins in the corner of the main Visitor Center Parking lot. Follow the path up the steep ridge - very sustained uphill for almost a mile. The Main Wall will be the first part of Wolf Rock seen from this direction.

When looking directly at Wolf Rock from the trail, the Main Wall will be the leftmost section.

Ghostwalker works up the leftmost quartz vein of The Main Wall, about 30 feet right (south) of the Wolf's Head Pillar. This is a great route for beginners and for practice placing protection.Use the numerous hand- and footholds to ascend the slabby terrain. Stay within six inches of the quartz. The upper portion is steeper but features great holds. The crack contains many opportunities for gear placement, but a TR can be set up without ascent....[more]   Browse More Classics in Maryland
