Description

This is an awesome section of lava tube where two separate portions of the tube have collapsed leaving an intact arch between the two sections and climbing in both collapsed sections as well as on the arch between them. The routes here tend to be short and bouldery with the exception of the route "Tube Steak" which is actually quite long (but still bouldery) due to the fact that it traverses the entire lip of the arch. The routes are north east facing, so most of them get morning sun and are shaded by late morning for the rest of the day. A nice feature of the area is the fact that right at the bottom of the cave under the arch there is a nice cool section that is kept cool by the same wind phenomenon that keeps the nearby Shoshone Indian Ice Caves frozen year round with an interior temperature of around 28 degrees F. This makes for a great area to cool off between burns!

Getting There

Drive north from Shoshone on Idaho highway 76 for about 16 miles to the turn off for the Shoshone Indian Ice Caves. At this point, instead of turning left as if going to the ice cave, turn right into the parking lot of the Bear Claw Trading Post. On the north side of the trading post there is a small dirt road heading east. Take this road for a quarter of a mile and park on the side of the road. From this point hike south, perpendicular to the dirt road for about a quarter of a mile. you will pass a small collapsed lava tube, then about 500 feet past it you will arrive at the double collapsed portion of the next lava tube that makes up this area. You can enter the tube from either the far east or far west parts of the tube with the arch being in the center.

Featured Route For The "Little" Cave

Small Axe 5.11b 6c 23 VIII- 23 E3 5c  Idaho : South Idaho : ... : The "Little" Cave
This route shares the start with Churning in the Choss and Telache. Start up the big jugs and stay left at the split. The bolts are very close to Churning, so the goal is to avoid the bigger holds on Churning to get the 5.11b grade. Crux comes just after the routes split....[more]   Browse More Classics in Idaho
